We at Custom Choice Cereal are just coming back from a meeting with another local celiac. She told us that she was so frustrated because it took her 7 doctors and over two years to finally find out that she had celiac disease. A biopsy confirmed the antibody blood test, and all her symptoms disappeared the week she went on a gluten-free diet!
Now this story might sound familiar to many of you and serves as a reminder to me how important it is to repeat the facts. At the end of the day we want to help end the needless suffering of the 95-97% US celiacs that remain undiagnosed. Indeed, Alice Bast founded the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) after only the 23rd (!) doctor correctly diagnosed her. If you experience any of the most common symptoms – bloating, chronic fatigue, stomach cramps & pain, diarrhea, rashes, or weakness – you need to insist on your next visit to the doctor to receive the following blood tests:
- Tissue transglutaminase antibody (tTG – lgA/lgG)
- Anti-endomysial antibody (lgA EMA)
- Anti-gliadin antibody (AGA-IgG, AGA-IgA)
If any of these comes back indicating that you might have celiac disease, only a biopsy can confirm the diagnosis.
I am from a family with a long tradition of doctors. And trust me, I know how hard-headed they can be sometimes! It is therefore highly recommended that you actually prepare a typed-out sheet with your symptoms, name the tests you would like to have done, and thereby educate your doctor who might be clueless about celiac disease. Having a written “research report” beats just telling the facts a million times over – it’s simply harder to ignore!
If this reminder helps just one person I will be a happy camper. In case you have similar stories to share or have been blessed with an outstanding doctor – please tell us about your experience! We’re looking forward to hearing and learning from you. And if you have another question, don’t forget our Q&A with celiac expert Dr. Stephen Wangen on every first Wednesday of the month!
