Gluten-free diet and autism controversy

At Custom Choice Cereal, we enable everyone to create tasty cereal mixes with exactly the ingredients they love! Inspired by a friend who is gluten intolerant and struggled finding a variety of tasty gluten-free breakfast foods, we decided to tackle this issue with our exclusively gluten-free cereal concoctions. Many reviews and comments on our facebook page have proven that gluten-free (cereal) does absolutely NOT have to be taste-free!

One thing always amazes us: there are tons of controversies about living gluten-free out there, especially in the context of autism. Families with an autistic family members are in the same boat. However, that doesn’t prevent often times heated discussions and even insults over the argument whether or not a gluten-free (and casein-free) diet can result in improvements of behavior or the leaky gut for their child.

Reading these discussions drives us crazy! WHY FIGHT EACH OTHER?? Seriously! None of us at Custom Choice Cereal are qualified to give medical advice but a healthy dose of common sense makes the decision pretty easy: try a gluten-free diet for at least a month, and if your child’s behavior and well-being improves we think it is (or should be) a no-brainer!

Do you agree? Disagree? Are we missing something?

Gluten-free diet and breastfeeding

A young breastfeeding mother wrote on Custom Choice Cereal’s facebook page about her baby’s allergic reaction to wheat. We learned from her that the food she eats gets passed on to her child, which only makes sense. Since gluten-free can be regarded as the “gold standard” of a wheat-free diet, Tina now follows a gluten-free diet. She created her first gluten-free Custom Choice Cereal mixes and says “they were both delicious”.

Tina’s wall post made us at Custom Choice Cereal wonder about the connection of breastfeeding and celiac disease, and a quick google search revealed some interesting information. Of course the decision to breastfeed or not is up to each individual family. But please keep on reading!

Lippincott's Nursing CenterA 2001 study by German researchers around U. Peters observed 143 children with celiac disease and 137 randomly selected non-celiac children. They found that breastfeeding for 2 or more months has a protective impact and decreased the risk of developing celiac disease by a whopping 63%. The Celiac Sprue Association and Lippincott’s Nursing Center provide more details on this study and other research in the context of breastfeeding and celiac disease.

We at Custom Choice Cereal aren’t doctors and cannot give anyone medical advice. However, our takeaway from these results is that Mother Nature simply knows it best!

“I just thought I would let you know that I tried out my Custom Choice Cereal today, and it was absolutely fabulous! Thank you so much!”

Please keep it coming because it’s the simple things in life that make a difference. A great way to tell us and everybody else about your cerealization is our facebook page!

This email was sent to us by Erica who writes the blog Fashion Meets Food and says about herself that she is “on a mission to indulge myself in a healthier, and happier lifestyle”. Aren’t we all – at least to some degree – on this mission to live healthier?!? We think that Custom Choice Cereal can help you achieve your health goals while at the same time not giving up on taste. Erica enjoyed her mix as a snack and writes on her blog:

“I absolutely loved the fact that it came in a clear bag. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just like to see what’s inside of packaging. My mix was delicious… I just ate it out of a bowl as a snack… no milk product needed just some fingers!”

We know that quite a few of you are intolerant to dairy as well, so this is a great way to enjoy your personal gluten-free treat. We also highly recommend it for travelling or hiking, so start mixing now!

Custom gluten-free cereal in the press

Sun HeraldWe like it when you tell us how much you enjoy your custom gluten-free cereal and how we are able to bring back taste and variety to your breakfast bowl. Great ways to get in touch are via Custom Choice Cereal on facebook or by simply sending us an email.

Today we are excited to see Custom Choice Cereal featured in The Sun Herald, the newspaper for Gulfport, MS. Andrea, the author of the article, checked out our website and wrote:

“I gave the Web site a try and created a gluten-free cinnamon raisin granola with apricots, pineapples and sesame seeds added for $7.06 for six half-cup servings. I loved that the nutritional labeling changed as I changed my mind about the ingredients. This is definitely worth checking out.”

We can only agree! Our updating nutrition label is more than just a fun feature: we want you to be in control, not only over the ingredients you choose for your gluten-free breakfast cereal, but also over the nutritional value of your mix. It’s Your Gluten Freedom!

Custom gluten-free cereal review on fb

They say that there is a first time for everything, and it is so true! This “first timer” Gluten-free Milwaukee on facebookis related to a review of Custom Choice Cereal’s tasty gluten-free cereal. Our friend Kati started the page GF Milwaukee – Gluten Free in and around Milwaukee, WI on facebook and posted a great review of our customized gluten-free cereal on it. You can also become a fan of Custom Choice Cereal on facebook!

As many celiacs she had a craving for Raisin Bran because she has not been able to have it since she found out that she had celiac disease. Kati therefore creating a simple blend by combining our Good Morning Flakes with raisins. She writes that “the raisins are some of the biggest I’ve ever seen! I had to watch myself that I didn’t eat the entire bag in one sitting!”

If you are missing a specific kind of cereal from before your gluten-free days you can re-create it at Custom Choice Cereal. Please contact us if you are missing a certain ingredient that you would like us to offer!

Social networking site for the gluten-free

Custom Choice Cereal has been wanting to write about this great social networking website for a while now. Adding this to our list of New Year’s resolutions apparently helped…

Gluten-Free Faces is a great website that allows anyone interested in or already on a gluten-free diet to connect with people from the gluten-free community. The functionality is obviously similar to facebook – by the way, if you have not done so already, feel free to become a fan of Custom Choice Cereal on facebook :-) – but there is more. We especially like the very active discussion forum where members talk about food safety, gluten tests, celiac disease, symptoms, recommendations, etc. because it is a great resource for anyone new to the gluten-free lifestyle.

Other features include gluten-free recipes, resources with links to gluten-free information and products, events, and videos. We suggest you definitely check it out. Just click on the picture below, and you are directed straight to our presence on Gluten Free Faces!
