Gluten-free cereal packaging features

Over the past couple of days we received a couple of emails asking for an explanation of our packaging. Questions ranged from the very broad “How do you package my gluten-free cereal?” to “Does the custom cereal that I receive in the mail include the nutrition facts I see on the homepage?” and “What is the purpose of the mix ID on the bag”?

091030 Bag nameWe at Custom Choice Cereal thought that it would be a wise decision to also explain our packaging here on our blog. You can see the front of one of our gluten-free cereal mixes on the right. It shows the individual name that you can give your personal cereal – in this case “UNC Fall 2009″ – below our logo as well as the total weight in ounces in grams.

091030 Nutrition labelNow to the more important backside of the bag which you can see on the left. It shows the nutrition facts of your cereal with the % Daily Values based on a 2,000 calorie diet as well as the ingredients that you chose below the nutrition information. That way you always know the nutrition values of the gluten-free deliciousness you are enjoying. It is the same info that automatically updates on our website as you add ingredients to your cereal. The number of servings for each ingredients are displayed in brackets right after the ingredient, i.e. “Apples (2)” means that you added two servings of apples to your mix. 091030 Date & Mix ID

Finally and most importantly, the mix ID and date of preparation of your custom gluten-free cereal is displayed at the bottom of the backside. Especially the mix ID is important as it allows simple reordering by entering it on our homepage. You also find information on how to contact us at the bottom of the label.

UNC class visit

Back in July when we had basically just graduated from the Kenan-Flagler Business School and were working on our website, one of our former professors approached us and asked if we wanted to present the company in one of his classes. We could not possibly decline, so today Patrick and I went back to campus to present Custom Choice Cereal and our concept of customizable gluten-free cereal to a class of students.

After about 15 minutes of presentation time, they started grilling us with their questions, and I must say that some were really impressive. The entrepreneurship program is obviously alive and kicking, it was fun for us to come back and see what current students are doing.

Hot off the press…

Custom Choice Cereal is reaching out to newspapers to promote our website. We are targeting North-Carolina newspapers, but would like to expand our reach. If anyone out there knows anyone working at a newspaper that may be willing to speak with us, please let us know!

On another note, as we approach Halloween, it is important to remember that 8% of trick-or-treaters will be unable to enjoy their treats because of food allergies. Bengals’ RB Cedric Benson is celiac

This weekend went great for RB Cedric Benson – playing against the Chicago Bears and his former teammates, he ran for a career high 189 yards and a touchdown.  The Cincinnati Bengals won the game with a final score of 45-10.

It was very interesting to find out that Benson was diagnosed with celiac disease shortly before his release from the Bears. Custom Choice Cereal was somewhat surprised because it shows that it can take a while even for highly monitored athletes to be diagnosed correctly. His gluten-free diet now gives Benson more energy though it is tougher for him to keep his weight. Click on the picture below to read the entire article by NBC Chicago.

Information on celiac disease

A week ago we posted a video in which Dr. Joseph A. Murray discusses his research findings about celiac disease in the increase in frequency of the condition over the past 50 years. Custom Choice Cereal saw another video with this renown researcher on celiac disease that we wanted to share with you. We also introduced a section on our own homepage that provides basic information, tips, and useful links on celiac disease.

This time, D. Murray describes celiac disease, discusses common symptoms, and most importantly mentions the importance of avoiding gluten and switching to an entirely gluten-free diet once diagnosed with celiac. In this context, it is very important that special attention is paid to avoiding any cross-contamination and carefully selecting food suppliers. He also points out that more recent research shows that celiac disease cannot be outgrown by kids as was previously believed. You can watch the entire video below.

Gluten-free and fighting fat

We saw a short article entitled “8 Foods That Fight Fat” by Lucy Danziger, Editor-in-Chief of SELF and wanted to share it here. Three of the eight foods that she lists – almonds, berries, and cinnamon – can already be added to your gluten-free cereal at Custom Choice Cereal. We even offer several different kinds of berries! There are many great ways you can include the other foods in your diet because we have no plans to include Mustard, Sweet Potatoes, or Swiss Cheese in our product offering…

Custom Choice Cereal can only agree with Lucy when she says that these foods “deserve a permanent spot in your fridge—and in your diet!”. Adding them as ingredients to your gluten-free cereal mix is a great way to do this!

Blogger reviews Custom Choice Cereal

Gluten Free Mike, a celiac from New York who writes about “his journey to gluten free fabulousness”, ordered two of Custom Choice Cereal’s gluten-free cereal mixes. I was especially happy that he included pistachios in one of the mixes because not many people experiment with their cereal, and after I tried it for the first time, pistachios became my new favorite ingredient! Check out the full article that Gluten Free Mike wrote about his cereal by clicking on the picture below:
